Michael Winter, Ph.D., is the Chief Scientist at RTX. RTX Corporation is a large Aerospace and Defense company providing advanced systems and services for commercial, military and government customers worldwide, comprised of three industry-leading businesses – Collins Aerospace Systems, Pratt & Whitney and Raytheon. In this role, Winter is responsible for accelerating the company’s position in key aerospace and defense technologies, critical tools, broad-reaching processes and the expansion of the company’s engineering knowledge, globally. He is also responsible for driving the use of agile methods to accelerate technology maturation and he plays a central role in shaping RTX’s external engagement strategy, to best represent the company’s diverse technology portfolio and priorities with universities, ventures and government stakeholders.
Winter brings more than 35 years of experience with the company, having held numerous leadership positions as a senior executive and principal fellow, including 14 years at the RTX Technology Research Center and most recently as a Pratt & Whitney principal fellow for Advanced Technology. At Pratt & Whitney, Michael led the technology portfolio enabling new commercial and military platforms including the Geared-Turbo Fan and the F-35 Lightning II propulsion systems. Throughout this time, his many contributions have included advancing aerospace technologies in the areas of fuel cells, lasers, and combustion and propulsion systems
He has authored of more than 40 patents and more than 50 published technical articles. He has served on the advisory boards of multiple engineering schools. He also served on the National Research Council Board of Assessment of the National Academies, is a member of the NASA Advisory Council, a Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics & Astronautics (AIAA) and the Royal Aeronautical Society, a member of the Connecticut Academy of Science and Engineering (CASE), and chairman of the Aerospace Industry Association (AIA) Environmental Committee. He holds a Doctor of Philosophy, Master of Science and Master of Philosophy degrees from Yale University and a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering from Drexel University. He is an avid cyclist, enjoys sea kayaking and recently received a black belt in Tang Soo Do.
