Justin Garrett Moore is Program Director of Humanities in Place at the Mellon Foundation, where he leads national and international initiatives supporting cultural heritage, public space, and stewardship of the built environment. His work focuses on strengthening cultural institutions, advancing thoughtful development, and fostering collaboration among cultural organizations, public agencies, and local partners. Trained as an architect and urban designer, he brings experience across planning, design, preservation, and the public realm.
Prior to joining Mellon, Moore worked for fifteen years in New York City government, where he led major urban design and planning projects at the Department of City Planning, including the Greenpoint-Williamsburg Waterfront, Hunter’s Point South, and the Brooklyn Cultural District. From 2016 to 2020, he served as Executive Director of the New York City Public Design Commission in the Mayor’s Office, overseeing the review and improvement of civic buildings, public spaces, and monuments across the city.
Moore teaches architecture and urbanism at Columbia University and the Yale School of Architecture and has also taught at Morgan State University and Tuskegee University. He holds a Bachelor of Design from the University of Florida and Master of Architecture and Master of Science in Urban Design degrees from Columbia University.
He is a Fellow of the American Institute of Certified Planners and a recipient of the American Academy of Arts and Letters Award in Architecture. He served on the United States Commission of Fine Arts from 2021 to 2025 and is an active member of several professional and civic organizations.
