Dr. Kimberley Steele is a Program Manager in the Health Science Futures Office at ARPA-H.

Dr. Steele joined ARPA-H in November 2023 from The Lymphatic Education & Research Network (LE&RN), where she served as Special Projects Director supporting lymphatic research efforts. Prior to that, she was an Associate Professor of Surgery at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where she spent over 14 years on faculty. Dr. Steele completed a fellowship in minimally invasive and bariatric surgery at Johns Hopkins and rose through the ranks to Associate Professor while earning a doctorate in Clinical Investigation from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and obtaining certification from the American Board of Obesity Medicine.

At Johns Hopkins, Dr. Steele was active across all three pillars of academic medicine — education, clinical care, and research. She directed the Innovations and Surgical Simulation Center, served as Associate Director of the Surgical Clerkship, and led the Adolescent Bariatric and Obesity Medicine program. She is recognized internationally for her contributions to research on bariatric surgery, the gut–brain axis, and neuroimaging in obesity.

Motivated by her son's diagnosis of a rare lymphatic anomaly, Dr. Steele shifted her focus to the investigation of lymphatic disease. Over the past seven years, she has worked tirelessly with clinicians, scientists, medical students, and advocacy organizations to advance the field of lymphatic medicine. As part of this effort, she founded the Collaborative Research Advocacy for Vascular Anomalies Network (CaRAVAN), a nonprofit dedicated to coordinating and supporting research in this space.
